Experts Examine Elder Abuse Prevention on "Finer With Age"
New Approaches Can Help Bring More Abusers to Justice

COLUMBUS - Barbara E. Riley, director of the Ohio Department of Aging, and expert guests discuss elder abuse, how to identify it and what individuals and the state can do to prevent it on the latest edition of Finer With Age, which will air on cable access and other stations throughout the state in October.

"Each year, between 500,000 and five million older Americans are abused, neglected or exploited," said Riley, who hosts the monthly television show. "It is hard to get an accurate estimate because it is believed that much of the abuse that occurs goes unreported. Nobody deserves to be abused or neglected, especially by those they have entrusted with their care and well being."

Riley is joined in the studio by Carol Dayton, the steering committee chair for the Ohio Coalition for Adult Protective Services, and Georgia J. Anetzberger, Ph.D., consultant and research associate with Visiting Nurse Association Healthcare Partners of Ohio, who offer their professional take on the prevalence of elder abuse and the steps being taken to stop it and bring abusers to justice.

The program concludes with a segment from the National Council on Aging and WITNESS, an international organization that specializes in using video to create social change and protect human rights. The video offers insights on elder abuse and advocates for passage of the Elder Justice Act in Congress.

Finer With Age is produced monthly by the Ohio Department of Aging, through a partnership with Ohio Government Television. The show is broadcast on select cable access and public broadcasting stations throughout the state. Check your local listings or contact your cable provider for air times. Viewers also may watch full episodes on the program's Web site, FinerWithAge.com.
