COLUMBUS - To celebrate Older Americans Month in May, the Ohio Department of Aging is asking Ohioans of all ages to submit pictures that show how they or their loved ones are living "Well Beyond 60!" From now through May 17, Ohioans can visit the Ohio Department of Aging on social media to share photos and short video clips that show the many things older Ohioans can do to be healthier, avoid injury, keep chronic conditions in check and contribute to their communities.
May is celebrated nationally as Older Americans Month to recognize the achievements of our elders and acknowledge the many organizations that serve them, care for them and provide them with opportunities to contribute. Ohio's theme for 2015, "Well Beyond 60!" emphasizes the role that each of us plays in determining our own health and wellness.
"What we do to and for ourselves throughout our lifespans has a greater impact on our health and well-being than genetics," said Bonnie K. Burman, Sc.D., director of the department. "There are many ways that older Ohioans can take control of their health and their safety, and continue to grow, thrive and contribute."
You can contribute to the Older Americans Month Photo Project by visiting the department's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/OhioDepartmentOfAging) and posting pictures or selfies to the department's timeline. You also can post photos and short video clips on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #WellBeyond60 and mentioning @OhioDeptOfAging to be included in the project. Additionally, you may submit photos by mail to: Ohio Department of Aging, ATTN: Older Americans Month Photo Project, 50 W. Broad St./9th Fl., Columbus OH 43215-3363. Please note: photos cannot be returned. The department reserves the right to use submitted images and videos in its online and print publications and outreach.
The department's staff and followers on social media will vote from May 18-22 to determine the top three photos, which will be posted on the department's website. Also, the submitters of the top photos will be given the opportunity to be interviewed for a feature about their photos. Submissions must be received by May 15 to be considered for voting.
