On Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019, Governor Mike DeWine held a meeting in Canfield with his agency cabinet directors. As part of the day’s planned activities throughout the Mahoning Valley, Ohio Department of Aging Director Ursel J. McElroy and other agency staff visited the Girard Multi-Generational Center in Trumbull County to announce statewide grant awards for farmers’ market projects.

The "Producing Healthy Seniors" program is an initiative to expand access to the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program to areas not previously served. "Producing Healthy Seniors" provides $40,000 grants to 11 area agencies on aging around the state to pilot innovative strategies and give vulnerable older Ohioans easier access to fresh, locally grown produce.

On Wednesday, Area Agency on Aging Region 9, Inc.; Direction Home Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities; and Direction Home of Eastern Ohio received three of the 11 statewide awards. Members of the Girard Multi-Generational Center also had the opportunity to select fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers: The Red Basket Farm, White House Fruit Farm, Huffman Fruit Farm, and Van Pelt Farm Market.
